ALEX YOUNGER

Italiano (Italian)

Alex Younger was born to stubborn intellectuals in Oakland, California and raised in the Capital District of New York State, surrounded by books, cameras, and looms. She graduatedfrom Swarthmore College in 2012 with an Honors Major in English Literature.

In 2018, she received her MFA in Fiber and Material Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work has been shown internationally and across the United States, including Chicago, New York City, St. Louis, Philadelphia, and Lodz, Poland. She and her cat Mickalene live on Chicago’s North Side, where they continue to be willful and surrounded by books, cameras, and looms.

“My work begins and ends with language.Using digital jacquard and hand weaving, printmaking, dye, and photography, I apply text as both content and composition. I match and merge processes and forms – complex multicloth structures, sections of floating warp, hand-dyeing techniques, stitchwork, and numerous printing methods – with cultural photographs and sourced texts to create unsettling declarative works. I am interested in how the content of an image, document, or statement is transformed when it is taken off of neutral paper”.

“Delicate but flexible and moveable, my pieces are multifunctional: monumental installations or intimately haptic objects that also serve as interactive works to explore the tactility and semiotics of authority and protest, considering the items, locations, and actors necessary to create a political action”.
