Chiharu Shiota è nata a Osaka, Giappone (1972), vive e lavora a Berlino. Shiota esplora l’esistenza umana nelle sue varie dimensioni, associa performance, body art e installazione in un processo che pone il corpo al centro. La sua pratica artistica rinvia ai concetti di temporalità, movimento, memoria e sogno. Le spettacolari installazioni combinano materiali tessili come lana e cotone con vari elementi e oggetti usati.
Nel 2008 ha ricevuto il premio Art Encouragement Prize dal Ministro giapponese dell’Educazione, Cultura, Sport, Scienza e Tecnologia. Le sue mostre personali in tutto il mondo includono il Mori Art Museum, Tokyo (2019); Gropius Bau, Berlino (2019); Smithsonian Institution Arthur M.Sackler Gallery, Washington DC (2014); il Museum of Art, Kochi (2013); e il National Museum of Art, Osaka (2008) tra gli altri. Ha inoltre partecipato a numerose mostre e nel 2015, Shiota è stata selezionata per rappresentare il Giappone alla 56a Biennale di Venezia, confermando la portata internazionale del suo lavoro.
