After skipping a year due to the pandemic, the Fiber Art Biennial, returns to Spoleto with its second edition, from December 8, 2021, to January 16, 2022. The event has received the Patronage of Regione Umbria, the Comune di Spoleto, and the Museo nazionale del Ducato di SpoletoRocca Albornoziana (National Museum of the Dukedom of Spoleto) which has additionally provided a showroom within the Rocca. The CAOS Art center in Terni will host a gathering on November 20th for a preview presentation of the Biennial.

There are four showrooms: four places where to center Art and reflect upon it. The founding theme of the Biennial is Research, both conducted by dedicated public institutions, and by private associations and groups.

‘Testimonianze’ (‘Testimonials’) is the space devoted to guest artists who represent Italian Fiber Art, some who often favor fiber as a medium, and others who show a non-exclusive preference for this medium. An ecosystem where individual contribution can be perceived as participating in a common worldview of art and culture.

Since the first edition, the promoters have chosen to showcase the works of students from the Fine Arts Academy who are looking for their own artistic expression through language, materials, and techniques, alongside established Artists. The latter carry rich experience and research work that has made them outstanding in the field of Fiber Art. This answers the need to explore through concrete practices contemporary Art trends in Fiber Art.

Academies and Artists express themselves by often singling out extremely current topics. The environmental crisis, life during pandemic, circular economy, recycling. With this in mind, the biennial has continued its collaboration with the luxury cashmere clothing company Galassia from Perugia through the project ‘Ritagli d’Autore. Nuove declinazioni del riuso’ (‘Signature Scraps. New shapes of recycling’)  curated by Margherita Labbe. The Fine Arts Academies of Brera, Carrara, Catania, Foggia, Lecce, Roma, Torino, Urbino, Venezia have joined and sponsored the project.

The Fine Arts Academy of Bologna is participating with the four works of five students in Architectural Decoration. The promoters wished to invite this institution to offer visitors other elements of Research in the Arts through the language of Fiber Art. Of note is the project ‘Patrimonio, risorse per lo spazio pubblico, strumenti per la progettazione artistica contemporanea’ (‘Patrimony, resources for public spaces, tools for contemporary art planning’) supported by the Academy and the Bologna Musei/Musei Civici d’Arte Antica, curated by Professor Vanna Romualdi. The site specific multisensory installation within Rocca Albornoziana is part of this project.

Our partner, DARS of Udine is present with selected works from the latest edition of the Artist’s Book Biennial of Udine, as well as the work of four artists currently active in the association.

The gallery Officina d’Arte & Tessuti is hosting seven fiber artists called to create the project  ‘Una nuova materia di espressività creativa: il feltro’ (A new creative expression material: felt), curated by Lydia Predominato and Eva Basile.

Underlining the synesthetic nature of the Association Officina d’Arte & Tessuti, there is an event devoted to music on December 11 at 11 AM, the inaugural concert in Sala Pegasus (music by P. Hindemith, R. Strauss, L. Dallapiccola).
