MARIA NEPOMUCENO
Maria Nepomuceno, carioca, born in 1976, lives and works in Rio de Janeiro. She began studying art at age 14 with free courses in drawing, painting, sculpture, theory, and industrial design at the School of Visual Arts of Parque Lage. For the past few years she has been dedicated to sculpture. Her work establishes a relationship between body and nature and the micro to the macrocosm, weaving the memories of their own backgrounds and experiences, promoting an encounter between past, present and future.
“Through the structural use of coloured ropes, stitched together with invisible fishing wire and a curved needle to form three-dimensional shapes, Maria Nepomuceno creates ambiguous objects that sit somewhere between sculpture, installation and textile art.
(…) Nepomuceno’s work is comparable to the immersive use of textiles pioneered by Ernesto Neto. She was part of the original group of artists pertaining to A Gentil Carioca, an artist-run space founded in 2006 by Marcio Botner, Laura Lima and Neto himself”. Claudio Iglesias
