REGARD OF ARTISTS: RAIJA JOKINEN AT THE DOMAINE DE TRÉVAREZ

On the occasion of the eleventh edition of Regard d’artiste, a meeting place for contemporary art in Brittany, the Domaine de Trévarez invites the Finnish artist Raija Jokinen. Inspired by the castle’s troubled history and the park’s botanical richness she addresses the relationship between humans and nature using linen and paper. Delicate works that play with our perception of space, organic silhouettes imbued with a delicate melancholy make up a journey through the stables, in the castle and the park.
With a background in weaving and textile design at the Helsinki University of Art and Design in the late 1980s, Raija Jokinen has been exhibiting her works around the world for over 30 years. She has received several awards in the field of textile arts, including the Finnish Textile Artist Award in 2020.
Her favorite material is flax fiber, which she dyes and assembles with rice starch, thereafter she sews it. Like a painter, she draws two-dimensional shapes that she exhibits suspended in space, producing effects of transparency and shadow.
In Trévarez, Raija Jokinen imagines hybrid characters, half human and half plant, linked to the place by a network of roots and blood. A poetic symbiosis that encourages us to reconnect with nature rather than destroy it.
