The Textile Biennial 2023. Images of Power is an international exhibition of high-quality and substantively strong contemporary visual art in which textile as a material plays the leading role.
In recent years, the biennials have been linked to a topical and substantive theme that addresses the most pressing issues we face worldwide. Climate change, our relationship to food, being/having a home and transition have been the themes in the past three years.
The theme of the Textile Biennial 2023 is Images of Power. The starting point is the representation of all possible forms of power that are under scrutiny and under discussion in this era. We invite artists to submit a proposal whose work presents a vision of all possible depictions of power. This could include world leaders, local governments, international organisations, multinationals and interest groups. We also draw attention to power structures in a smaller, more personal context; in a family, at work or in any other social context.
The Textile Biennial 2023 will show the many interpretations and meanings of the representation of power that artists give to it in their work. The sum of visions on the theme Images of Power are testimonies to the need for a new world order and trust in those who hold power.
