Platform è un’organizzazione artistica con sede a Vasa, una città finlandese relativamente periferica. Gestiamo uno spazio d’arte e una residenza per offrire esperienze dal vivo di prospettive diverse in un luogo dove questo sarebbe altrimenti limitato. Negli ultimi anni questa è stata una sfida.
“Di solito lavoriamo con un tema annuale che incoraggiamo anche gli artisti ospiti a esaminare. Nel 2022 abbiamo cercato di essere positivi, allegri, di ricominciare da capo e di ripartire da zero. Abbiamo pensato che “Nuovi inizi” sarebbe stato un buon tema per l’anno. Ma in realtà le cose non sono ricominciate, per lo più tutto ha continuato a macinare o a prendere polvere.
Quindi per il 2023/24 vogliamo provare qualcosa di diverso. Invece di darvi un tema a cui rispondere, vorremmo porre una domanda e riflettere sul ruolo dell’artista, sulla pratica dell’artista e sulla rilevanza dell’opera d’arte. Qual è la rilevanza del vostro lavoro e delle vostre opere d’arte e in che modo la vostra pratica si collega alla domanda della residenza Platform?
Non ci sono risposte sbagliate e non vogliamo assolutamente che vi sentiate in dovere di giustificare qualcosa con noi. Noi (Platform Board) stiamo cercando di capirlo.
Ma diciamo che la rilevanza delle opere d’arte e del lavoro artistico cambia in base al tempo, al contesto, al pubblico e all’artista. Qual è la rilevanza delle tue opere d’arte? ”

Per l’anno 2023: 3-4 posti in residenza e in particolare ricerca di:
– Artisti che reagiscono e sono interessati a lavorare con problemi locali.
– Artisti che lavorano con progetti specifici per il luogo.
– Artisti che si sentano a proprio agio nel lavorare in modo indipendente in una piccola città.

Offerta
Alloggio, spese di viaggio (un viaggio di andata e ritorno, il più economico possibile) e una borsa di lavoro (circa 300 € a settimana);
Un piccolo budget di produzione di 1000 €, che l’artista può rimborsare presentando le ricevute originali degli acquisti, specificamente connessi al progetto prodotto durante la residenza.
L’appartamento si trova vicino al centro della città di Vaasa. L’artista ha a disposizione una bicicletta, un set di strumenti e attrezzature. L’appartamento è dotato di accesso wireless a banda larga. Al momento Platform non ospita uno studio, ma è disponibile un project space nel centro della città. I progetti pianificati devono tenerne conto; lo spazio può essere affittato o preso in prestito se necessario per la realizzazione del progetto e deve essere negoziato in anticipo. All’artista viene assegnata una persona di contatto che si occupa degli accordi necessari; se è necessaria un’assistenza aggiuntiva, deve essere concordata con largo anticipo.
All’artista viene chiesto di realizzare un progetto, che può essere presentato durante la residenza o in una fase successiva. L’artista è tenuto a tenere un discorso pubblico, una performance o un workshop sul proprio lavoro o a presentarsi all’inizio della residenza. Ci aspettiamo che l’artista sia in grado di comunicare in inglese, svedese o finlandese. Si richiede che l’artista trascorra almeno l’80% della durata della residenza a Vaasa e la borsa di lavoro è proporzionale ai giorni trascorsi a Vaasa. Gli artisti sono tenuti a presentare alla Piattaforma la documentazione del progetto prodotto, oltre a un comunicato stampa/testo informativo/relazione informale o equivalente.

Procedura di candidatura
Si prega di seguire attentamente le presenti istruzioni.
Le candidature che non rispettano questi requisiti non saranno prese in considerazione. L’artista è tenuto a inviare una domanda di partecipazione in formato digitale all’indirizzo info@platform.fi con oggetto “Residency Application 2023” entro il 10 luglio 2022. La domanda deve essere un documento PDF con il proprio nome e cognome come titolo del documento. Non incollare nell’e-mail alcuna informazione rilevante che non faccia parte del PDF.
Si prega di includere nel PDF quanto segue:
-Un piano di progetto informale o una lettera di motivazione, massimo una pagina. L’obiettivo della lettera dovrebbe essere quello di descrivere il tipo di progetto che si immagina di realizzare a Vaasa, la motivazione a candidarsi per questa residenza e le aspettative, il modo in cui si ritiene che il proprio lavoro artistico si colleghi alla domanda “La rilevanza delle opere d’arte e del lavoro artistico?”. Il piano del progetto dovrebbe anche includere il periodo di tempo che preferite e dichiarare se il periodo di tempo è rilevante per il progetto, oltre a indicare chiaramente quali sono i tempi e gli orari che non sono adatti.
-Descrizioni e immagini di 5 progetti o opere d’arte. Per i video, si prega di aggiungere i link diretti ai siti web nel PDF.
-Un curriculum vitae di massimo due pagine, che includa: nome, data e luogo di nascita, sede attuale, email e numero di telefono.
La domanda non deve occupare più di 12 pagine e 5 mb. La commissione della Piattaforma effettuerà la selezione. Solo gli artisti scelti riceveranno una notifica della selezione alla fine di luglio 2022. Il comitato non ha alcun obbligo di giustificare la selezione. Se avete domande sulla residenza, siete pregati di porle prima della scadenza.

Platform is an art organization based in Vasa, a relatively peripheral Finnish town. We run an art space and a residency to offer live experiences of different perspectives in a location where this would otherwise be limited. The last few years this has been a challenge.

“We usually work with an annual theme that we also encourage their guest artists to examine. In 2022 we tried to stay positive, be cheerful, start over and start fresh. We thought that “New beginnings” would be a good theme for the year. But it turns out things didn’t really start anew, mostly everything just kept on grinding or gathering dust.

So for 2023/24 we want to try something different. Instead of giving you a theme to respond to we would like to ask a question and reflect on the artist’s role, the practice of the artist and the relevance of art work/art works. What is the relevance of your work and artworks and how does your practice relate to the Platform residency question?

There are no wrong answers and we definitely don’t want you to feel that you have to justify anything to us. We (Platform Board) are trying to figure it out.

But let’s say that the relevance of artworks and art work changes by time, context, audience and artist. What’s the relevance of your art work(s)? “

For the year 2023: 3-4 slots in residency and particularly looking for:

– Artists who react to and are interested in working with local issues

– Artists who work with place-specific projects.

– Artists who are comfortable working independently in a small town.

Offer

Accommodation, travel expenses (one return trip, cheapest possible) and a working grant (approx. 300 € per week);

A small production budget of 1000 €, which the artist may reimburse by presenting original receipts of purchases, specifically connected to the project produced during the residency.

The apartment is located near the city center in Vaasa. There is a bike, a set of tools and equipment available for the artist. There is wireless broadband access in the apartment. Platform does not at the moment house a studio, however a project space in the city center is available. The planned projects have to take this into account, space can be rented or borrowed if needed for the realization of the project and has to be negotiated in advance. The artist is given a contact person who is in charge of necessary arrangements, if any additional assistance is needed it has to be agreed upon well in advance.

The artist is asked to realize a project, which can be presented either during the residency or at a later stage. The artist is expected to give a public talk, performance or workshop about his/her/their work or an introduction to themselves at the beginning of the residency. We expect the artist to be able to communicate in English, Swedish or Finnish. We require the artist to spend at least 80% of the residency’s duration in Vaasa and the working grant is proportional to days spent in Vaasa. The artists are required to submit documentation of the produced project to Platform, as well as press release / information text / informal report or equivalent.

Application procedure

Please follow these instructions closely.

Applications not following these requirements will not be considered. The artist is required to send a digital application to info@platform.fi with the subject ‘Residency Application 2023’ by the 10th of July 2022. The application should be one PDF document with your full name as the title of the document. Don’t paste any relevant information in the email that is not part of the PDF.

Please include the following in the PDF:

-An informal project plan OR motivation letter, max one page. The aim of the letter should be describing the kind of project you imagine doing in Vaasa, your motivation to apply for this residency and your expectations, how you see that your artistic work connects to the question of “The relevance of artworks and art work?” The project plan should also include your preferred period of time, and state if the time period is relevant for the project as well as clearly state what time/ times that aren’t suitable.

-Descriptions and images of 5 projects or art works. For videos, please add direct links to websites in the PDF

-A CV of max two pages, including: name, date and place of birth, current location as well as email and phone number.

The application shall occupy no more than 12 pages and 5 mb. The board of Platform will make the selection. Only chosen artists will receive a notification about the selection during end of July 2022. The board is under no obligation to justify the selection. If you have questions about the residency please ask them well before the deadline.
