La mostra Craft Front & Center, un’esposizione in corso della crescente collezione permanente del Museum of Arts and Design (MAD), composta da oltre 3.500 oggetti, presenta una nuova installazione di oltre 60 opere storiche e nuove acquisizioni risalenti all’epoca d’oro del movimento Craft americano fino ai giorni nostri. Organizzata secondo i temi della trasformazione dei materiali, dello smantellamento delle gerarchie, della contemplazione, dell’identità e della sostenibilità, la mostra illustra come il vasto campo dell’artigianato abbia ampliato le definizioni di arte.

Istituita nel 1956, la collezione permanente del MAD è stata frutto della visione della fondatrice del museo, Aileen Osborne Webb, collezionista e filantropa che ha aperto la strada alla comprensione dell’artigianato e del fatto a mano come forza creativa trainante dell’arte e del design. Con l’obiettivo di ampliare l’accesso al patrimonio della collezione, Craft Front & Center mette in luce anche il lavoro di diversi artisti tessili, tra cui Ruth Clement Bond, Lenore Tawney, Carolyn Mazloomi e Sarah Zapata.
