DENUDARE FEMINAS VESTIS – MINIARTEXTIL ’32

“L’arte di dipanare i bozzoli per tesserli fu escogitata da una donna dell’isola di Cos, Panfile, figlia di Platea, che non va defraudata della gloria di aver escogitato il modo di denudar le donne vestendole” (Plinio il Vecchio, Naturalis Historia, XI, 26).

Lo spunto per il titolo della mostra Miniartexil ’32, Denudare feminas vestis (Denudare le donne vestendole), deriva dalle parole di Plinio il Vecchio estrapolate dalla sua monumentale opera Naturalis Historia, indicate e approfondite dal poeta e scrittore Vincenzo Guarracino.

L’edizione 2023 in programma a Como, Ex Chiesa di San Pietro in Atrio e altri luoghi, dal 6 agosto al 3 settembre e organizzata nell’ambito delle Celebrazioni del Bimillenario Pliniano – sarà dedicata e rientrerà nel programma delle Celebrazioni del Bimillenario della nascita di Plinio, pilastro comasco della cultura classica.

Come da tradizione, accanto ai minitessili (54 opere) realizzati da artisti provenienti da tutto il mondo ci saranno diverse opere di grandi dimensioni realizzate da artisti internazionali sia emergenti che affermati.

IL TEMA

Miniartextil ’32 proporrà una riflessione materica, emozionale sulla seta – eccellenza del distretto tessile comasco testimoniata anche da Plinio il Vecchio – e sulle possibili interpretazioni dell’universo femminile.

Nel corso delle sue sterminate indagini naturalistiche, Plinio si dedicò anche allo studio della seta, arrivando a confutare la credenza secondo cui il filato era prodotto e raccolto direttamente da alberi fiabeschi, coperti da soffici foglie e da lunghi filamenti, coltivati dal ricco popolo dei Seres (da cui l’origine del termine “serico”) agli estremi orientali del mondo allora conosciuto.

Nel libro XI della Naturalis Historia, dedicato agli insetti, Plinio scrisse infatti: «Da un verme alquanto grande deriva dapprima un bruco che spinge fuori due corna tipiche del suo genere, poi viene ciò che è detto baco, da esso la crisalide, donde dopo sei mesi nasce il baco vero e proprio. Al modo dei ragni si tesse la tela per lussuose vesti femminili, che sono dette bombicine». Infine, “L’arte di dipanare i bozzoli per tesserli fu escogitata da una donna dell’isola di Cos, Panfile, figlia di Platea, che non va defraudata della gloria di aver escogitato il modo di denudar le donne vestendole” (Plinio, N.H., XI, 26)

La frase ossimorica “Denudare feminas vestis” si lega alla considerazione di quanto, già nel primo secolo dopo Cristo, i preziosi abiti in seta che avvolgevano il corpo femminile ne evidenziassero ancora di più le forme, rendendole nude allo sguardo. Come si legge ancora nella Naturalis Historia, «l’uomo è l’unico fra tutti gli esseri viventi a procurarsi all’esterno i suoi vestiti (…). (La Natura) soltanto l’uomo getta nudo sulla nuda terra il giorno della sua nascita». Il vestirsi è dunque una caratteristica propria del genere umano. Al di là della valenza biblica legata al mito di Adamo ed Eva, l’abbigliamento nasce come bisogno di protezione e di ornamento. Nei secoli l’arte e la moda hanno negoziato e declinato il concetto di coprire e di svelare il corpo femminile nelle sue molteplici valenze estetiche, etiche, culturali e politiche.

CURATELA E OPERE

La curatela della mostra è affidata alla critica d’arte e regista Clarita Di Giovanni che vive a Roma ed è docente alla Scuola di Arte Cinematografica G.M. Volontè dal 2011. Sarà affiancata dalla presenza di Sergio Gaddi, noto critico e curatore d’arte comasco, di fama nazionale con una grande capacità professionale e organizzativa. Gaddi è anche il responsabile della commissione di selezione delle opere di piccolo formato.

Come ogni anno Miniartextil ‘32 sarà una mostra che si articola in due proposte parallele: da una parte le 54 opere di piccole dimensioni (minitessili, cm.20x20x20) che saranno esposte presso la Ex Chiesa di San Pietro in Atrio, dall’altra le grandi installazioni che saranno presenti nel medesimo luogo e in differenti punti della città. Il dialogo che nascerà tra le piccole e le grandi opere e l’architettura antica di San Pietro in Atrio creerà una simbiosi unica e coinvolgente. Qui, in uno spazio dedicato, si terranno anche laboratori didattici per avvicinare il pubblico dei più piccoli all’Arte sotto forma di gioco.

Per quanto riguarda l’aspetto di “mostra diffusa”, Miniartextil ’32 prevede il coinvolgimento di artisti che operano con performances e installazioni all’aperto e in luoghi pubblici e privati. Le opere installate nelle sedi istituzionali e private valorizzeranno gli spazi e incrementeranno l’afflusso, l’interesse e l’attenzione dei cittadini e dei turisti.

Tra gli artisti emergenti e i nuovi talenti che parteciperanno alla mostra realizzando grandi installazioni: l’artista serba Brankica Zilovic, l’architetto giapponese Kato Kimiyasu, l’italo-egiziano Medhat Shafik, gli italiani Antonella De Nisco e Alessandro Lupi. Inoltre sarà ospite anche l’artista dello Zimbabwe, Moffat Takadiwa che esporrà sue opere anche alla 60° Biennale di Venezia nel Padiglione dello Zimbabwe nel 2024.

I MINITESSILI

I 54 minitessili provenienti da tutto il mondo e selezionati attraverso l’annuale Call for Artists, promossa per la raccolta delle candidature di artisti internazionali, sono stati scelti – su oltre 250 opere ricevute – dalla giuria coordinata da Mimmo Totaro, – artista, presidente di Arte&Arte e fondatore di Miniartextil insieme a Nazzarena Bortolaso, e composta da Kimiyasu Kato, architetto fotografo e artista, da 30 anni in Italia; Giuseppe Menta, disegnatore, studioso di tecniche del colore, creatore di tessuti, imprenditore; Sergio Gaddi, critico e curatore di mostre d’arte e responsabile della commissione di valutazione delle opere.

Plinio il Vecchio

Attraverso Plinio, generazioni di letterati, scienziati e artisti hanno sognato, immaginato, conosciuto il loro mondo e contribuito a formare l’epoca attuale. Per loro, l’accento è sempre posto sull’unità della cultura quale la concepiva Plinio che fu «scienziato e umanista completo in un tempo in cui non esisteva ancora frattura tra Scienza e Lettere» (Luigi Alfonsi).

La Naturalis Historia non solo è la più antica “enciclopedia” giunta fino a noi, ma è anche una delle più significative opere dell’Antichità e la sua lettura è stata e continua a essere utilissima non solo come studio del passato, ma anche come strumento di indagine e generatore di domande per il presente. In effetti, sebbene Plinio non indaghi tanto le cause dei fenomeni, preoccupandosi soprattutto di raccogliere quanti più dati e informazioni su un determinato argomento, uno dei più rilevanti lasciti della Naturalis Historia è l’esortazione ad abitare il dubbio, non smettendo mai di sondare l’ignoto.

CHI SIAMO

Miniartextil è stata fondata nel 1991 da Nazzarena Bortolaso e Mimmo Totaro con l’idea di portare a Como, città culla della tradizione tessile, una mostra dedicata alla fiber art.

Nel 1994 è stata costituita l’Associazione culturale ARTE&ARTE che ancora oggi promuove la rassegna e continua la ricerca per selezionare la migliore produzione di fiber art a livello mondiale.

Nel corso degli ultimi trenta anni, Miniartextil ha toccato luoghi e città in tutta Europa, a partire da Como che oggi è la principale sede espositiva – si ricordano gli allestimenti al Chiostrino di Santa Eufemia, a Villa Olmo, alla ex Ticosa, alle ex chiese di San Francesco e di San Pietro in Atrio, al Palazzo del Broletto, alla Pinacoteca Civica, al Museo Giovio, al Padiglione ex Grossisti del Mercato Coperto, al Museo della Seta di Como, oltre a piazze e luoghi pubblici.

Interessante la tournée internazionale della mostra, negli anni: Montrouge – Parigi, Mulhouse, Kaunas, Caudry, Lille, Gif-Sur-Yvette, Busto Arsizio, alcune delle città che hanno ospitato le opere della rassegna.

“The art of unravelling cocoons in order to weave them was devised by a woman from the island of Cos, Panfile, daughter of Platea, who should not be defrauded of the glory of having devised the way of denuding women by dressing them” (Pliny the Elder, Naturalis Historia, XI, 26).

The inspiration for the title of the Miniartexil ’32 exhibition, Denudare feminas vestis (Denuding women by dressing them), derives from Pliny the Elder’s words extrapolated from his monumental work Naturalis Historia, indicated and expanded upon by the poet and writer Vincenzo Guarracino.

The 2023 edition to be held in Como, Ex Chiesa di San Pietro in Atrio and other venues, from 6 August to 3 September and organised as part of the Bimillenary Celebrations of Pliny – will be dedicated to and form part of the programme of the Bimillenary Celebrations of the birth of Pliny, a Como pillar of classical culture.

THE TOPIC

Miniartextil ’32 will propose a material, emotional reflection on silk – an excellence of the Como textile district also testified to by Pliny the Elder – and on the possible interpretations of the female universe.

In the course of his endless naturalistic investigations, Pliny also devoted himself to the study of silk, going so far as to refute the belief that the yarn was produced and harvested directly from fairy trees, covered with soft leaves and long filaments, cultivated by the rich people of the Seres (hence the origin of the term “serico”) at the eastern ends of the then known world.

In Book XI of the Naturalis Historia, dedicated to insects, Pliny wrote: ‘From a rather large worm comes first a caterpillar, which pushes out two horns typical of its kind, then comes what is called a worm, from it the chrysalis, whence after six months the actual worm is born. In the manner of spiders, cloth is woven for luxurious women’s garments, which are called bombicinas’. Finally, ‘The art of unravelling the cocoons to weave them was devised by a woman from the island of Cos, Panfile, daughter of Platea, who should not be defrauded of the glory of having devised the way of denuding women by dressing them’ (Pliny, N.H., XI, 26)

The oxymoronic phrase ‘Denudare feminas vestis’ is linked to the consideration of how, already in the first century AD, the precious silk garments that enveloped the female body further emphasised their forms, rendering them naked to the eye. As we read again in the Naturalis Historia, ‘Man is the only one of all living beings who obtains his clothes from the outside (…). (Nature) alone casts man naked upon the bare earth on the day of his birth’. Clothing is thus a characteristic of mankind. Beyond the biblical significance linked to the myth of Adam and Eve, clothing originated as a need for protection and adornment. Over the centuries, art and fashion have negotiated and declined the concept of covering and revealing the female body in its multiple aesthetic, ethical, cultural and political valences.

CURATELY AND ARTWORKS

The curatorship of the exhibition is entrusted to art critic and filmmaker Clarita Di Giovanni, who lives in Rome and has taught at the G.M. Volontè School of Cinematographic Art since 2011. She will be joined by Sergio Gaddi, a nationally renowned art critic and curator from Como with great professional and organisational skills. Gaddi is also the head of the selection committee for small-format works.

Like every year, Miniartextil ’32 will be an exhibition divided into two parallel proposals: on the one hand, the 54 small works (mini-textiles, cm.20x20x20) that will be exhibited in the Ex Chiesa di San Pietro in Atrio, and on the other hand, the large installations that will be present in the same place and in different parts of the city. The dialogue that will arise between the small and large works and the ancient architecture of San Pietro in Atrio will create a unique and engaging symbiosis. Here, in a dedicated space, didactic workshops will also be held to bring the younger public closer to Art in the form of play.

With regard to the ‘diffuse exhibition’ aspect, Miniartextil ’32 envisages the involvement of artists working with performances and installations outdoors and in public and private venues. The works installed in institutional and private venues will enhance the spaces and increase the flow, interest and attention of citizens and tourists.

Among the emerging artists and new talents who will participate in the exhibition by creating large-scale installations: the Serbian artist Brankica Zilovic, the Japanese architect Kato Kimiyasu, the Italian-Egyptian Medhat Shafik, the Italians Antonella De Nisco and Alessandro Lupi. Zimbabwean artist Moffat Takadiwa, who will also exhibit his works at the 60th Venice Biennale in the Zimbabwe Pavilion in 2024, will also be a guest.

THE MINITESSILI

The 54 mini-textiles coming from all over the world and selected through the annual Call for Artists, promoted to collect nominations from international artists, were chosen – out of over 250 works received – by the jury coordinated by Mimmo Totaro, – artist, president of Arte&Arte and founder of Miniartextil together with Nazzarena Bortolaso, and composed of Kimiyasu Kato, architect, photographer and artist, in Italy for 30 years; Giuseppe Menta, designer, expert in colour techniques, fabric creator, entrepreneur; Sergio Gaddi, art critic and curator of art exhibitions and head of the works evaluation committee.

Plinio il Vecchio

Through Plinio, generations of men of letters, scientists and artists have dreamt, imagined, known their world and helped to shape the present age. For them, the emphasis is always on the unity of culture as conceived by Pliny, who was a ‘complete scientist and humanist at a time when there was not yet a divide between Science and Letters’ (Luigi Alfonsi).

The Naturalis Historia is not only the oldest ‘encyclopaedia’ that has come down to us, it is also one of the most significant works of Antiquity, and reading it has been and continues to be extremely useful not only as a study of the past, but also as a tool for investigation and a generator of questions for the present. Indeed, although Pliny does not so much investigate the causes of phenomena, being primarily concerned with gathering as much data and information on a given subject as possible, one of the most relevant legacies of the Naturalis Historia is the exhortation to inhabit doubt, never ceasing to probe the unknown.

ABOUT US

Miniartextil was founded in 1991 by Nazzarena Bortolaso and Mimmo Totaro with the idea of bringing an exhibition dedicated to fibre art to Como, the cradle of the textile tradition.

In 1994, the cultural association ARTE&ARTE was established, which still promotes the exhibition and continues the research to select the best fibre art production worldwide.

Over the last thirty years, Miniartextil has visited places and cities all over Europe, starting from Como, which today is the main exhibition venue – we can mention the installations at the Chiostrino di Santa Eufemia, at Villa Olmo, at the former Ticosa, at the former churches of San Francesco and San Pietro in Atrio, at Palazzo del Broletto, at the Pinacoteca Civica, at Museo Giovio, at the former Wholesalers’ Pavilion of the Covered Market, at the Como Silk Museum, as well as in squares and public places.

The international tour of the exhibition over the years has been interesting: Montrouge – Paris, Mulhouse, Kaunas, Caudry, Lille, Gif-Sur-Yvette, Busto Arsizio, some of the cities that have hosted the works in the exhibition.
