KYOTO INTERCHANGE, a Kyoto-based institution of contemporary art, announce the solo exhibition
“AIKO TEZUKA” f rom January 22 (Monday) to March 17 (Sunday), 2024.
Aiko Tezuka, the internationally active contemporary artist based in Japan and Berlin, is known f or her f ocus on
textiles and embroidery, where the process of creation can be reversed to reveal the generative process, and f or
her unique method of unraveling threads to reveal the textile’s structure.
This exhibition f ocuses on new works created with motif s related to Japan’s seclusion and opening to the outside
world, collected by Tezuka during her research in Dejima, Nagasaki, and Leiden, the Netherlands, as well as
contemporary Emoji and AI-generated images. Tezuka produced the new textile in collaboration with Kaji Textile
Inc. in Nishijin, Kyoto.
Nishijin is one of Japan’s leading textile production centers, historically known f or its f ine silk and high level of
technical expertise. This project also attempts to develop new textiles in collaboration with these craf tsmen.
Tezuka, who has exhibited all over the world and consciously used ready-made textiles in contemporary art, has
also continued to explore the relationship between Japan and the West, and between art and craf t (or decoration).
This exhibition presents the results of these ongoing ef f orts. We invite you to enjoy it.

KYOTO INTERCHANGE, un’istituzione d’arte contemporanea con sede a Kyoto, annuncia la mostra personale
“AIKO TEZUKA” dal 22 gennaio (lunedì) al 17 marzo (domenica) 2024.
Aiko Tezuka, artista contemporanea attiva a livello internazionale con sede in Giappone e a Berlino, è nota per la sua particolare attenzione ai tessuti e ai ricami, in cui il processo di creazione può essere invertito per rivelare il processo generativo, e per il suo metodo unico di dipanare i fili per rivelare la struttura del tessuto.
Questa mostra si concentra su nuove opere create con motivi legati all’isolamento e all’apertura del Giappone verso il mondo esterno, raccolte da Tezuka durante la sua ricerca a Dejima, Nagasaki, e a Leida, nei Paesi Bassi, oltre a Emoji contemporanee e immagini generate dall’intelligenza artificiale. Tezuka ha prodotto il nuovo tessuto in collaborazione con Kaji Textile Inc. di Nishijin, Kyoto.
Nishijin è uno dei principali centri di produzione tessile del Giappone, storicamente noto per la sua seta pregiata e l’alto livello di competenza tecnica. Questo progetto cerca anche di sviluppare nuovi tessuti in collaborazione con questi artigiani.
Tezuka, che ha esposto in tutto il mondo e ha usato consapevolmente tessuti già pronti nell’arte contemporanea, ha anche continuato a esplorare il rapporto tra il Giappone e l’Occidente e tra arte e artigianato.
Questa mostra mostra i risultati di questi continui studi.
