Giunto alla sua quarta edizione, il Fine Art Textiles Award è una mostra internazionale aperta a tutti gli artisti professionisti e non che utilizzano il tessile come medium primario. Il premio riconosce il talento creativo e la professionalità di una vasta comunità di artisti di alto calibro le cui opere d’arte trovino la loro massima espressione nel contesto di una galleria.

Il vincitore sarà annunciato alla Cerimonia di premiazione (The Awards Ceremony) durante il Festival of Quilts al NEC, Birmingham, giovedì 18 agosto alle 12.30, e gli sarà conferito un premio di 5.000 sterline. Verrà inoltre assegnato un secondo premio del valore di 500 sterline per l’Uso Innovativo dei Tessili ad un artista il cui uso del medium tessile rispecchi un approccio particolarmente complesso e/o impattante.

La giuria di quest’anno è composta da un autorevole gruppo di artisti tessili, curatori ed esperti del settore: Annie Warburton, speaker TEDx su artigianato, cultura e design e CEO di Cockpit Arts, il più importante atelier di artigianato contemporaneo di Londra; gli artisti tessili Esna Su e Yemi Awosile; Michael Brennand-Wood, artista, curatore ed educatore indipendente; Yoshiko Iwamoto Wada, artista, curatore, autore e presidente della World Shibori Network Foundation; e Jo Hall, scrittore, curatore ed editore della rivista Embroidery, pubblicata dalla Embroiderers’ Guild.

I lavori selezionati saranno esposti in una galleria dedicata all’interno del Festival of Quilts dal 18 al 21 agosto 2022, e successivamente al The Knitting & Stitching Show a Londra (Alexandra Palace) e a Harrogate in autunno.

Secondo i criteri di ammissione, le opere devono trascendere il loro aspetto artigianale o il processo di fabbricazione, distinguendosi come opere d’arte a sé stanti. Il tessuto e il filo devono avere un ruolo dominante nei lavori presentati, e questi ultimi devono affondare le radici e rispecchiare a pieno l’ispirazione, la fonte, il concetto o l’idea dell’artista. Le opere possono essere in 2D o 3D, sono esclusi capi di abbigliamento, a meno che non si presentino come opere d’arte. Le opere devono essere state create entro i 24 mesi precedenti al 31 maggio 2022, e non essere state esposte in nessuna mostra importante nel Regno Unito (con giuria, personale, collettive o altro).

Vincitore del 2021 del Fine Art Textiles Award è stata l’artista tessile Woo Jin Joo, che risiede a Londra e si occupa di mixed media. Il lavoro dell’artista premiato 虎死留皮，人死留名。(traduzione: ‘Quando una tigre muore, lascia la sua pelle. Quando muore un uomo, lascia questo nome’) presentava la scultura di una tigre, ricamata e cucita su una borsa IKEA prima che l’artista sciogliesse il tessuto di supporto.

Influenzata dalle tradizioni, dalle filosofie e dalla cultura asiatica, l’artista, originaria della Corea, ha affermato: “Attraverso il mio lavoro, cerco di sfidare la nostra attuale percezione del valore del tessile, in modo da poter iniziare a costruire una relazione più consapevole”.

I vincitori delle scorse edizioni del Fine Art Textiles Award sono 2021 – Woo Jin Joo (When a tiger dies it leaves behind it’s skin. When a man dies he leaves behind his name, 2021) Shelly Goldsmith (Locus of the Dress, 2020) e Ann Goddard (On the Brink, 2019).

Il Fine Art Textiles Award è una mostra internazionale aperta a tutti gli artisti professionisti e non che utilizzano il tessile come medium di espressione. Il Fine Art Textiles Award vuolepremiare i talenti creativi e le abilità di un’ampia comunità di artisti di alto livello (quilter inclusi) e celebra il riconoscimento dell’arte tessile fra le arti maggiori.

Il Festival of Quilts

Il Festival of Quilts in Europa è una tappa obbligata per il quilting, con straordinarie gallerie di artisti e gruppi internazionali, 700 quilt in concorso, un vasto programma di conferenze e workshop, e più di 200 espositori che offrono tutte le forniture necessarie. Il Festival si svolge dal 18 al 21 agosto 2022 al NEC Birmingham (padiglioni 6, 7, 8 e 9). L’orario di apertura è tutti i giorni dalle 9.30 alle 17.30 (la domenica chiude alle 17.00).

Now in its fourth year, The Fine Art Textiles Award is an international juried exhibition open to all amateur and practising artists using textiles as their primary medium. The award recognises the creative talents and skills of a broad community of high-calibre artists producing gallery-quality fine art.

The winner will be announced at The Awards Ceremony at The Festival of Quilts at the NEC Birmingham on Thursday 18^th August at 12.30pm, with a £5,000 prize awarded. An award for Innovative Use of Textiles, will be presented to an artist whose work demonstrates a particularly complex and/or powerful approach to the use of textiles, with a prize of £500 attached.

This year’s award judging panel are an esteemed group of textile artists, curators and experts: Annie Warburton, a TEDx speaker on craft, culture and design and CEO at Cockpit Arts, London’s leading contemporary craft studios; textile artists Esna Su and Yemi Awosile; Michael Brennand-Wood, an independent artist, curator and educator; Yoshiko Iwamoto Wada, artist, curator, author and President of the World Shibori Network Foundation; and Jo Hall, writer, curator and editor of Embroidery magazine, published by the Embroiderers’ Guild.

Shortlisted entries will be exhibited in a dedicated gallery at The Festival of Quilts from 18^th-21^st August 2022, followed by exhibitions at The Knitting & Stitching Show in London (Alexandra Palace) and Harrogate this autumn.

Entry criteria stipulate that works must transcend their craft or making process, standing alone as fine art. Works must be clearly rooted in – and reflect – the artist’s inspiration, source, concept or idea, with cloth and thread playing a dominant role. Works can be 2D or 3D, with the exception of garments, unless those garments present as fine art. Entries must have been made within 24 months prior to 31st May 2022, and must not have been shown at any major exhibition in the UK (juried, solo, group or otherwise).

The 2021 winner of The Fine Art Textiles Award was London-based mixed media textile artist, Woo Jin Joo. The artist’s award-winning work 虎死留皮，人死留名。(translation: ‘When a tiger dies, it leaves behind its skin. When a man dies, he leaves behind this name’) featured a tiger sculpture, embroidered and stitched onto an IKEA bag before the artist dissolved the backing fabric.

Influenced by Asian traditions, philosophies, and culture, the Korean-born artist said: “Through my work, I seek to challenge our current perception of textiles’ value so that we could start building a more mindful relationship.”
